Bukit Batok New Town Bukit Batok Town is a fairly new town with approximately 31,000 units of flats, the majority of which are 3-room to 4-room flats serving a population of around 120,000 residents. The words ‘Bukit Batok’ is derived from the words “Bukit” which signifies “Hill” and “Batok” which signifies “Cough”. Used in the 1950s for granite quarrying, the blasting of the granites sounded as if the hills were coughing, hence Bukit Batok’s name. Bukit Batok was a sleepy rural outback in the 1950s and was mainly occupied by forest and farm lands. Factories located in the area included Hume Industries and the famous Ford Motor Works Factory (venue of the British surrender to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 during WWII). In the 1970s, the government began developing the area into a modern satellite town. By the 1980s, clusters of HDB flats were built in the area.
Located in the Western Region of Singapore, Bukit Batok New Town is bounded by Upper Bukit Timah Road and Old Jurong Road to the east, the Pan Island Expressway to the south, Bukit Batok Road to the west
and Chua Chu Kang Road to the north. Bukit Panjang New Town, Jurong New Town and Clementi New Town lie to its east, southwest and south respectively.
