Bukit Panjang New Town Formerly known as Zhenghua estate, Bukit Panjang today comprises about 500 ha of land with about half of it occupied for residential use. Bukit Panjang, which means "long spread of hill" in Malay, was used to describe the range of low hills stretching from Mandai to Bukit Timah. The town’s 80,000-strong population is served by about 22,000 4-room and 5-room flats, among others. Bounded by Bukit Timah Expressway to the east, Kranji Expressway to the north, Upper Bukit Timah Road to the west and Pan Island Expressway to the south, Bukit Panjang New Town is a self-contained residential suburb with extensive facilities like schools, places of worship and several shopping attractions including Bukit Panjang Plaza, Greenridge Shopping Centre, Fajar Shopping Centre and Ten Mile Junction. The Bukit Panjang LRT system originates and terminates at Choa Chu Kang MRT Station and loops through the town via seven strategic stops. Though a relatively new town, Bukit Panjang is expected to become even livelier with the development of more housing projects in the area, particularly around the MRT and LRT transit stations.
In addition, Bukit Panjang is close to the 414 ha Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Since 1882, the rain forests around Bukit Timah Hill were set aside for the protection and preservation of Singapore’s
natural fauna and flora, thus offering residents a glimpse into Singapore’s astonishing biodiversity.
