Sengkang New Town “Sengkang” translates into “prosperous harbour” in Chinese. However, the town was formerly known as “Kangkar”, or “foot of the port” in Hokkien, as fishing villages, rubber plantations and a port used to thrive in the area. While it is now a modern town with the necessary contemporary comforts and convenience, the town’s housing design deeply reflects its rich history. Most housing blocks in the area are built with a 3-storey pilotis effect (ground-level supporting columns by which buildings are lifted), to recall the stilts of fishing villages of bygone years. A relatively young satellite town located in the North-Eastern region of Singapore, Sengkang is bounded by Punggol New Town to the north, Ang Mo Kio New Town to the southwest, Hougang New Town and Serangoon New Town to the south and Pasir Ris New Town to the east. An integrated approach was used to develop the town’s transport, commercial and housing facilities. The town is well-linked to the rest of Singapore via the Sengkang MRT station, Sengkang LRT station and the bus interchange, all of which are housed within a single building to allow for seamless travel. The LRT system runs in two loops, with one serving the eastern side and the other serving the west.
In terms of leisure and entertainment, residents are spoilt for choice with the establishment of several sports facilities, parks and shopping malls such as Rivervale Plaza, Rivervale Mall and Compass
Point. In addition, Sengkang’s two main rivers, Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon, bring life to the town with its network of park connectors.
