Hougang New Town The name “Hougang” is derived from the Chinese dialect word “Owkung” which means “back of the river”. This is due to the area being located upstream or at the back of Sungei Serangoon. Hougang New Town is located in the North-Eastern Region of Singapore. It is bounded by Yio Chu Kang Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road to the west, Airport Road to the south, Paya Lebar Airport to the east and Sengkang New Town to the north. Regarded as part of the quintessential “heartlands” of Singapore, Hougang is fairly self-sufficient with ample amenities serving its residents, just like many other residential towns in Singapore. The town has some 47,000 units of flats, the majority of which are 4-room types.
Punggol Park and Punggol South Park offer weekenders a wonderful spot for picnics and barbeques. For some sporting fun, residents can make use of the Hougang Swimming Complex, Hougang Sports Hall and
Hougang Stadium. One of the more prominent landmarks in Hougang is 'Da Jing Jiao', a symbolic well built by the Teochew community during the early days which now stands at Blk 205 Hougang Street 21.
